Paysharing App

App concept and promo website for a startup offering an easy way to split total expenses

info

About the Project

Paysharing bill-splitting app that allows users to easily track shared expenses and debts among friends and family.

The app allows users to create groups, add expenses and debts, and then divide them among group members. It also provides a feature that helps settle debts and request money from group members. It’s meant to spare you extra anxiety and help maintain good relationships with friends and colleagues.

Problem

There is an app idea, but no understanding of how interested people would be in money sharing application.

It was also not clear who would find it handy to use.

Project Goal

We needed to test the hypothesis about the potential user groups, finding the app suitable for day-to-day situations.

Hypothesis about the groups of users

Suggested audience groups that could use the app for their frequent needs:

Travelers

We chose «Travelers» as the primary user category to target since it was the most obvious: when people go on vacation with friends, they always have shared expenses.

Parents in Group Chats

But there were also «Parents in Group Chats», who had to raise cash in messengers for school trips or other occasions. The stakeholder discovered this pain through Customer Development interviews.

Colleagues

Excellent visual design is a part of a good user experience, so there is a need to apply a cohesive style that would highlight the music concert theme of the platform.

Neighbours

Couples, young professionals renting housing together, or students sharing a dorm room are all examples of «neighbors».

Considered Steps

It was decided to create a promotional landing that shows concept screens to illustrate how the app works in order to validate the hypothesis

The quantity of users who have subscribed to the app's updates from various interest groups will dictate the subsequent stages of app development. My role was to design the landing page and app screens.

Competitive Analysis

Paysharing should take into consideration the features and design of its competitors, such as Splitwise, Il Conto, SettleUp, Tricount, and KittySplit, when developing their own app.

However, it should also aim to differentiate itself by considering the target audience's needs and preferences, and by improving the interface and marketing design.

Additionally, Paysharing should consider the benefits of a cross-platform format, like KittySplit, and explore opportunities for advertising and expanding to more languages in the future.

Design Process

Redesigning the app screens, refining user flows and animating

I started off with the idea for the app, stakeholder-made prototypes of the key features in Miro, and an early version of the app screens that the idea-owners had rejected.

The aim was to redesign the existing screens, making them look more appealing and modern by applying new visual identity. Also I needed to find more covenient solutions for chosen features and coordinate them with IOS guidelines.

I refined user flows, prototyped and animated them in Principle.

Solution

Filter by participant

Check operations of others, attach receipts if needed and sort transactions by date or name

Adding the expense

Having paid the sum just point out the main things: how much and what for.

The app will add an expense and split it up into everyone involved

creating the common budjet

You may pair up a couple or a family with a shared budget inside one group

Smart-splitting the bill

Split it up automaticly into equal parts or point out the exact sum for each member

To test the hypothesis, we added the button «Download the app» fixed on the top of the screen.

To test which platform we would eventually consider the primary one, we divided the «Download» buttons for the CTA section into platforms (IOS and Android).

Even though users still couldn’t download the app, in the pop-up, we thanked them for their trust and offered a year of free subscription as a reward.

Results and Next Steps

Results and conclusions from the test marketing campaign

The most promising audience turned out to be «Parents in group chats»

Despite the high number of clicks from this group (CTR 0.4%), the website was not effectively communicating how the app could solve the problem of money collection in parent chats. To improve results, it is recommended to create a dedicated landing page on the website that clearly explains the solution for money collection problems.

«Neigbors/renters» came in second place as an interested audience (CTR 0.2%) and had one request on the website for the app.

Travelers had the most visitors through ads (174 visits), but did not result in any requests.

Colleagues: it seems that the concept of sharing the cost of lunches at work did not resonate with the audience.

It is better to not focus on lunches with colleagues, and instead only write about debts and reminders.

Next steps

New landing page and user scenario for parents

A separate landing page for the parents audience should be created, and a version of the app interface designed specifically for their needs should be tested again. This audience has proven to be the most interested.

Hypothesis about the new target audience

A new audience has been added to replace «colleagues who have lunches at work» - «people who need to be reminded about debts» which primarily consists of young people who frequently visit restaurants, cafes, and bars.

Travelers and neighbors remain to be our target groups.

Reflection

What did I learn from this project?

It was my first experience creating an app concept. Making it, I had an opportunity to get acquainted with the IOS and Android guidelines. As I learned almost everything I know through practice, I consider it the most effective way to learn.

What would you do differently?

We could save money and time if I handed the motion design portion (in After Effects) on to the motion designer. Moreover, although I found the animation process to be enjoyable, I don't think it appears as polished as it could.
